The Terracotta Army was discovered in 1974 near Xi'an during irrigation works. It formed part of Emperor Qin Shi Huang?s mausoleum and consisted of more than 7,000 life-size terracotta figures of warriors, horses and chariots made from a mixture of clay and earth.
